Study on the Impact of Social Innovation at PT ANTAM UBPE Pongkor

PT ANTAM UBPE Pongkor

This study was prepared by AIlesh (PT Cipta Inovasi Berkelanjutan) and PT ANTAM Tbk UBPE Pongkor for submission to the PROPER Secretariat of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. The objectives and scope of the study were determined through discussions with the PT ANTAM Tbk UBPE Pongkor team and the PEPELING Cisangku Community Group. The data used in this study was collected by the PT ANTAM Tbk UBPE Pongkor team from field activities conducted between 2017 and 2023. The key findings for the client include an environmental impact evaluation of social innovation programs using life cycle assessment (LCA) to measure the environmental footprint of these initiatives, as well as an assessment of how social innovations address key corporate environmental concerns and contribute to disaster mitigation efforts. The study also provides responses to environmental assessment criteria for social innovation programs, aligns with the innovation requirements in the DRKPL (Environmental Performance Rating Program), and demonstrates the contribution of community development programs to reducing environmental impact. Additionally, it incorporates independent studies and literature reviews to substantiate the environmental benefits and ensures that social innovation initiatives align with LCA frameworks.

PT ANTAM UBPE Pongkor has launched the Community Empowerment Program Based on Environmental Conservation (PEPELING) Cisangku as part of its corporate social and environmental responsibility. This program engages the Cisangku Village community in various activities, including sheep farming, tree planting as part of post-mining reclamation efforts, and utilizing livestock waste to produce bokashi compost. PEPELING creates a sustainable value chain that benefits the local community by reducing organic fertilizer costs while promoting active participation in tree planting for post-mining land rehabilitation. The initiative aims to mitigate the negative environmental impacts of mining activities and restore biodiversity levels and ecosystem functions. With proper planning and maintenance, the program has the potential to provide significant long-term benefits for both the environment and the local community.

Social innovation programs like PEPELING play a crucial role in Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), particularly in minimizing environmental impacts within the raw material subsystem. The program includes planting endemic trees in post-mining areas, significantly contributing to greenhouse gas emission reduction, especially through the Dewatering system unit. Research findings indicate that PEPELING has successfully planted 356,000 endemic trees between 2017 and 2023 in PT ANTAM UBPE Pongkor’s operational areas, resulting in a total CO2 absorption of 19,912.2 tons. The Ciguha & Longsoran Blocks recorded the highest CO2 absorption, approximately 730 x 10 tons, due to the older age of planted trees. The absorption capacity of each tree varies based on biomass size and the total number of trees planted. This initiative has effectively reduced the environmental impact in the Greenhouse Gas category by 87%. The PEPELING Cisangku program by PT ANTAM UBPE Pongkor serves as a tangible example of how social innovation can mitigate environmental impact and enhance sustainability through community participation in post-mining land rehabilitation and CO2 emissions reduction.
